Today I took my kids to a seminar to learn new trends in publishing. I have to say that in a different life I might have liked to work in publishing. I find it interesting. One of the neater things we saw were layouts from magazines I had never heard of...Paste was one I would recommend everyone check out. It has nice layouts - messy, but they work. That is besides the point. Each issue has a CD or DVD with it. That more than covers the cost of each issue. It sounds interesting for that reason alone.
On a funnier and rather curious note the guest speaker named Jen - who is young and was referred to as a national expert...she got kind of irritating to listen to after three hours...why? Well she had two quirky things she said over and over again. Catch phrases are something that I find myself using and I hate them - I try and make myself stop using them because I loathe them. I am trying to remove them from my vernacular all together. This girl used them as staples for description and main themes of thought and reason. I don't know if my students caught on, but it was highly comical.
So what are the quirky sayings? Well yum and huge of course. Yep those are the two words she couldn't live without...so let me give you some context.
- "Kids I have only one thing to say about that double page spread...Yum."
- "Using one font with multiple faces is Huuuge!"
- "Writing sub-headers that are longer than most paragraphs is Huuuge!"
- "Slanted Font...Yum!"
- "Look at that kerning...can you believe it! - That is another HUGE trend! Yum kids. Yum, Yum, Yum."
- "Typeography Pictures are Huuuge, Yum!"
I couldn't keep count, but it went on for a while. If I had had another adult with me I would have probably drawn attention to myself since I was smiling at her because of how silly she sounded.
So to recap - Paste is a good magazine that has nice layouts that you will find Yummy that shows new trends in layouts that are huge and therefore you should check it out.
