Reagan's First Pool Party

This is too cute to not post. Matt, Krissie, and Reagan came down for Memorial Day weekend. Reagan got in the pool for the first time and loved it. You guys might have forgotten, but I lifeguarded and taught kids swimming lessons for about 5 years. So, little Rae is too small to really instruct but she did have her first dunk. She was a bit startled but blew out the candle (which is what you do with little kids to remind them to breathe when they come up) just fine. She's Baywatch babe in the making. Obviously this pic is pre-dunk. Happy Memorial Day!

Summertime

As we enter the summer season, my plants have been in full bloom. I decided to take some pics of my house, and thought I'd give you guys another visual of my home sweet home. My house is nothing special as you know, but it's mine and I love it. I know the photos are quite small but I think you can click on them and they will enlarge.
Today was a really nice day, at least after I arrived, Snellville style. But seriously. Heather, you really out did yourself, the whole thing was your doing and it was beautiful- Katie, it was so nice to have a day dedicated to you, you got some goods and some good company to go along with it- and Leigh Ann, Happy Bday dear.. embrace the present, enjoy your mid 20s.. you deserve it.. in the words of Sheryl Crow.. "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got. [So, go] soak up the sun!" Not to mention you did a damn good job with the shower games.
Despite my lack of knowledge about anything related to cuts of meat, metric conversions, or spices.. it was all a lot of fun. Not to mention, seeing Heather's amazing new house, Leigh Ann's stomping grounds, and D.T. Lawrenceville. All in all, quite a successful day/evening. I thank the three of you, and I count myself lucky to call you all friends. Lady sends a sloppy shout out, I'm off to bed.

In honor
I think that I will share 10 things that my mother did that amazed me during her short life...things that most people would not realize since most people didn't have a chance to get to know her very well. I invite you to share 10 things that amaze you about your mothers...
She could -
1. cook without a recipe...this is why today nothing she made can be duplicated
2. be nice to really mean people...she never felt the need to be mean back.
3. make friends with anyone anywhere at anytime - it didn't matter if she had a reason to - she never needed to be alone or have time to herself
4. always want to have her picture taken - this is something that I will never understand, but I admired ever time it was time for photos
5. believe that excess did not exist in her world...she thought that living meant that there were not limits...fun, laughing, spending...all of it was to do to the nth degree
6. produce a funny saying or phrase for everything
7. tell a funny story no matter the occasion or the audience
8. be brilliant at her profession without having to intimidate people
9. love her children to the point that their worst faults were invisible to her
10. use every moment of her life as a teaching moment and not a preaching moment...
remarkable, different and all together warm - she was born to be a mother and I miss her more every year...absence truly does make the heart grow fonder...when you lose your mother you lose part of yourself and part of you is born at the same time that you never knew existed.

Slow blog no more

Ok I'm back. These past two weeks have been nuts.. giving finals.. grading finals.. reading books.. meeting with professors.. starting Maymester. Tonight I've given myself a night on the couch with a movie I grabbed from Berry's Media Collection, it's my new free source for flicks. Not a bad collection. I have had three really vindicating events this week. The first was an email from a former student, it was great to hear how well she's doing. She was the quietest kid I've ever taught, painfully quiet. She is a sophomore in college and doing well, thinking about a history major which always warms my heart ;) The second was a visit with another former student, she's home from Charleston and doing well too. We've been in and out of touch, and now as she's 22- we ate and both ordered a beer. That might have been the best part. She is finding her way in the world, and I am so happy for her. Of course, she has had her fair share of tough decisions but she has a tender heart and a strong head. She has always reminded me a lot of myself (minus the tender heart part ;)), and to see her all grown up makes me proud. The final affirmation of this busy week was having dinner with Ayla and her little brother and sister. She was the one who I organized Cmas presents for last year, living in that horrible trailer, mom in jail. The mom is out and doing great, the kids are clean and happy. So me and Lena went to dinner with all of them. The whole thing just warmed my heart, I really almost cried. If you could have seen where they were living before, now seeing them so full of life. And Ayla is so big, I swear she's grown 6 inches since the last time I saw her. They all have a long way to go, but to see them now as opposed to last year is night and day difference. The pictures are of them, precious and sweet. Teaching does have its success stories. Ok, my couch is calling. Hope you are all well.

I especially like the Olan Mills type picture.
