My brother Rob got his first haircut in Greece. He's wanted a 'Euro mullet' for some time now. His reflections after the event are worth the sharing.. quite funny. Here's his email to me:
Big Sis,
What up. Well, I've finished another week of language here, and it coming along. I can introduce myself, tell where Im from, ask how someone is doing, count to 20, say my abc's, etc. The newness is wearing off a little, thank goodness. The only thing is Im having a hard time getting the right modem for my internet connection.
I went to get a haircut the other day, and you know that I was going for the Euro-mullet -with a silent t-. (which, by the way, about 60% of guys have here). I explained to a lady there who spoke English who told the dude cutting my hair what I wanted. By the way, there are salons (for men and women) and bakeries on just about every corner. Greeks love their pastries fresh and their hair coiffed. Anyway, the place was shwank and the guy cutting hair was so trendy he would have brought queer eye to tears of joy. He motions for me to sit, and then a little "mini-me" comes skipping out. He "preps" me for the "main event". Then the dude comes over, runs a comb through my hair and appears to be studying the form.
The lady explains what I said (trim on top, shorter on the sides, longer in the back). He runs his fingers along the sides, making a little sound effect (in lieu of language) indicating where he was going to cut. I was almost in tears holding back the laughter. He gave an incredible performance, and gave me the haircut that Ive been wanting since Innsbruck. He knew exactly what I was talking about! I feel so vindicated. He even put my sideburns into an angle as a finishing touch. After he finished, spank-boy came back in and cleaned me off and gave me gel and stuff while the "artist" (Apostolos) had a smoke. I was thinking that I may have been in over my head, and that this was going to cost 50 Euros or something. Nope, just 10. I was really impressed. Ive felt much more confident on the streets since.
Anyway, I thought Id share this story with you as you know that Ive been chasing the elusive euro-mullet for sometime now.
I hope all is well back home. I miss seeing everyone, hopefully Ill be home this fall or Christmas. Give me an update when you can.
Rob
