In memoriam- Butterflies for Katherine

Some of you know this story, some do not. Katherine Wilson was a friend of mine from my North Carolina group. I first knew her through my camp friend Elizabeth Bender. We lived together briefly - in the summer where six of us ventured off to Wilmington and got odd jobs for the summer. Elizabeth, Katherine, and Allison were roommates at UNC and the best of friends. Katherine even made it down for a Mtn. Day one year, after I promised the girls they had never seen anything so strange as the Grand March. She was smart, funny, thoughtful- truly beautiful inside and out. She even made sure we were all ok at Mardi Gras- despite her own inebriation. She first learned she had a rare form of cancer while in graduate school for nursing at 22. After a long battle with cancer she passed away last winter 2005 at 28 years of age. We all hated to lose her but are glad that she no longer has to fight her painful and draining battle. The following card and gesture is in memory of her, and I wanted to pass it along. She would have been 29 this November 3rd.

Card contents- Butterflies for Katherine's Birthday

Dear Friends,

As you may remember, when Katherine began brain radiation her hair first came out on the back of her head in the shape of a butterfly. When her hair started to grow back, it grew out in the butterfuly area first as shown in her photo. The butterfly became a symbol of hope for Katherine and for us.

We thought it would be special for each of you to join with us as we remember her 29th birthday on Thursday, November 3rd, by wearing the enclosed butterfly. We miss her so much but we are thankful she no longer has to suffer. She was a truly amazing blessing in our lives. As Ann Stegall put it so beautifully, "God has plans that we will never be privy to, but God knew exactly what he was doing when he sent Katherine to touch all of our lives."

With love,
Anne and John (her parents)

*If you happen to have a butterfly pin, sticker, picture, etc. and also want to wear it in Katherine's memory this week send me a picture. Her family loves the ripple effect of friendship. Loves. Mary Ellen

Is this not the creepiest Halloween card you've ever seen? My friend Lena actually owns a set of these stationary cards. For some reason it makes me think of 'Children of the Corn.'

i want it that way...

I can't help it, but this is just phenomenal. Even if you've seen it about 10x before, it's worth watching AGAIN....AND AGAIN...AND AGAIN.

Attention

This is upsetting but I thought I should pass it along. Check your
drivers license. Now you can see anyone's Driver's License on the
Internet, including your own! I just searched for mine and there it
was picture and all!! Thanks Homeland Security! Where are our
rights? I definitely removed mine. I suggest you do the same. .

Go to the web site and check it out. Just enter your name, city and
state to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the
screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it
from public viewing, but not from law enforcement.

Mary Kay Letourneau

So after finally getting home tonight.. after some road work on I-75, I needed to wind down before bed. Well actually I'm still getting there I guess. So I ran across the made for tv movie on Mary Kay Letourneau (flashback- 34 yr. old teacher/13 yr. old student = 2 children). So after finishing the movie I wondered.. what ever happened to them.. he's got to be 21..22.. by now? So I just searched for my answer online. The answer is-- they just got MARRIED this past summer. For a new shot of Villi (Billie) and Mary Kay (molester not cosmetic goddess) go to the article on their nupials at CBS News. Also you can click the linked title. Although it's a crazy ass story, in some ways I'm glad he/she made an honest woman/man out of her/him. And did you know that they actually first knew each other when she taught him in 2nd grade.. 2nd grade. Good Lord.

Worst Song Ever

Please someone shoot me!

I thought that stupid Bananas song by Gwen Stefani was bad, but I've been proven incredibly wrong. The Black Eyed Peas now have a song out called "My Humps". You guys are smart, I'm sure you can figure out what they are referring to. Hands down the worst song of all times. I would rather listen to System of a Down than deal with that ear_ _ _ _.

Now I can't get it out of my head...make the pain stop!!!!! And just in case you guys want to suffer as well, please go ahead and click here - I dare you.

In the land of...

DATING.. Leigh Ann are you going to fill us in or what? Don't make me come to Graycen (Is that how you spell it?)and open a can. I am so sad you have a prior commitment and can't make it to the birthday bash Saturday. Girls, we need to plan a bike ride/picnic at Berry sometime soon before it gets too cold. I have the last weekend of October free.. is it good for anyone else?

Alsatian: Gueter geburtsdaa!
Amharic: Melkam lidet!

Assyrian: Eida D'moladukh Hawee Brikha!
Aus-Viennese: Ois guade winsch i dia zum Gbuadsdog!
Bolivia: Suma Urupnaya Cchuru Uromankja!
Azerbaijani: Ad gununuz mubarek! -- for people older than you
Ad gunun mubarek! -- for people younger than you

You guessed it.. how to say Happy Birthday in different languages.

it's all about the timing

I'm in Charlottesville tonight. We had dinner at a lovely restaurant called "Zocalo". Sound familiar? That's because Atlanta, too, has a restaurant by the same name. I digress. We spent the wonderfully cool evening wandering through the downtown mall...from one end to the other. Well, there came this lovely sound eminating (?) from the other end of the Mall so of course we were drawn to it. Lo and behold, Jason Mraz was performing at Charlottesville's downtown amphitheatre. We didn't stay long, but I at least got to see and hear the little fella. Never thought of myself as a huge fan (even though you each ended up with one of his songs on the most recent cd), but now I may be. Quite impressive I must say.

Hope all is well. Leigh Ann - enjoy your whirlwind weekend dates and please feel free to give us full reports. Heather, I'm hoping I'll be able to stop by Quince tomorrow, but not sure if time will permit. Mary Ellen, make sure Lady doesn't eat anymore of your lawn furniture. ; )

Friday night

My good friend Ann called earlier. She's so funny. She said that she wasn't sure why but she had been in a sour mood all day. Who the hell says sour mood? The last time she was in a bad mood she made the comment that she was "just a little crabby." Definitely creative with terming and defining her mood. So she asked if we could drink a couple of beers via phone and catch up. As you know, no one has to twist my arm about beer. I was out so I went to the store and picked up my first Coors Light Camouflage 18 pack. It was on sale for $11 but the cans are camouflage. I thought it ironic, after this I may just need to get a mullet and turn on the NASCAR channel. But after two beers and hanging up with Ann I've realized it's still early, tonight might be a song writing night. Any theme requests? Hang in there. How is everyone.. my contact has been sub par lately.

Mountain Day

As you may know, the first weekend in October is Mountain Day a.k.a. homecoming at Berry. This year Buffy came in town and stayed with me (since Lena is about to give birth tomorrow). We had a blast and Jones (Buffy's little boy) was just too cute, we played all weekend. Here are my two favorite pics- what a beautiful family (Jamie holds his own corner for 'hotness' himself). Hope everyone's weekend went well.
